Plans: get up early, tie up loose ends with regards to work and projects, hit the road by 10AM
Actual: get up around 7:00 AM, work until noon, leave Boulder after lunch. Officially hit the road at 1:45PM
Needless to say, that changed a lot of our plans! We’d originally planned to leave Monday morning and land in Salt Lake City before dark on Monday night so we could find a place to camp and be set up before the sun went down. That changed because of our late start, and because we didn’t realize how cold the temps were going to be up here at night! We don’t have much more camping gear than a couple of sleeping bags with us, so camping outside in 30-something degree weather is just out of the question.
Instead of making it to Salt Lake City, we’re about an hour and a half east in Evanston, WY. We found a place with free wi-fi so we could get some work done and check email before going to bed, and to be honest – I am grateful for a solid night’s sleep, a hot shower in the morning, and a continental breakfast to send us on our way. We even nourished our stiff-from-sitting-all-day muscles by spending about 45 minutes in the pool and hot tub.
The trip out flew by quickly. We stopped in Rawlins, WY for some groceries. It’s our goal to stay within budget as well as stay committed to the healthy choices we make at home, so we figured picking up some supplies for sandwiches and snacks would be a better move than stopping for fast food along the way.
Excellent option – $40 got us plenty of road trip food, and we picked high-protein, low-sugar options to keep energy levels up without crashes. This whole traveling healthy thing is possible after all!
Other highlights from the trip today:
- We spent a half hour listening to Chris’ “Learn to Speak Norwegian” CDs on the way out here, and I’m now able to ask whether or not you speak English or Norwegian, tell you that I can or can’t speak either at all or a little, and ask if you’re an American. Tomorrow’s Lesson 2. I’m hoping it’s “Where’s the bathroom?” or “A glass of wine please?” but I’m guessing we’re not quite there yet.
- Wyoming radio stations are mostly country music stations, and actually while in Wyoming? That’s totally appropriate.
- Hitting a hot tub at the end of long drive is nothing short of blissful.
- “This isn’t vacation, this is life,” might be the best thing we’ve said all day about our decisions to make travel such an incorporated part of our lifestyle that we could work from the road, keep up with healthy habits, and stick to a budget. We’re doing it, and loving it.
- My boyfriend is the best travel partner ever.
If you want to follow my tweets from this trip, I’m hash-tagging them #reno2010, mostly so I can go back and put it all together later – but you’re welcome to stalk and follow along!
We’ve got a 9-hour drive ahead of us on Tuesday – have any favorite road trip games you could recommend?
